How Teens Can Use Art to Start Conversations about Depression

Teenagers have to go through more than we know. As teens’ minds are developing, and constantly exposed to new experiences and emotions, it can be challenging to deal with all the new changes in their lives. As a result, depression continues to be a pressing issue affecting about 3.7 million teenagers today. Depression is the most common mental disorder in the world that manifests in various symptoms for each individual such as lack of energy, sadness, or anxiety.

Depression casts a dark shadow over teens' lives and often can create feelings of helplessness where teenagers are unable to reach out to their loved ones because they cannot escape the confines of their emotional battles.

To overcome the battle of depression, art may just be the perfect key.

Creative self-expression is extremely important in our fast-paced, technology-driven world. Self-expression through art can help teenagers take time off of strenuous tasks and focus on relaxation and self-reflection.

As stated by the American Art Therapy Association, “Art Therapy is used to improve cognitive and sensorimotor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness” Countless studies have shown art therapy is beneficial to improving one’s mental health as the process of making art can be very therapeutic.

How Can Art Help?

Expressing Emotions

Teenagers with depression struggle to express their feelings as they tend to bottle up all the emotions inside of them. Art can be the perfect medium to channel those feelings in an open and easy manner.

Self-discovery

By creating art, teenagers will get the chance to embark on their own journey of self-discovery as they identify their own strengths, weaknesses, and qualities which they may have never thought of before.

Mindfulness

Art can help promote mindfulness and relaxation in a teenager as this is a no-strain activity. Teenagers can focus on the present moment instead of any negative thoughts jarring their heads.

How Can Teens Utilize Art?

Choose a medium that speaks to their truth

Choose one type of medium to create art: painting, pottery, journaling, etc

Create art

There are no rules or boundaries. Just start creating art to channel whatever emotions you are feeling at the moment

Reflect

Your art is a reflection of your feelings as it resonates with your mind. Observe your art for some time to get in touch with your feelings.

Share your Art

Describing your feelings with words can be challenging, so a good step to take after creating art is to share your art with others whom you trust. This can encourage open conversations as you will have the opportunity to talk about your art and possibly your own experiences.

Art is a powerful tool that has shaped our world today. It is medium that has allowed people to express their feelings and emotions. As art can empower and heal, it is the best method to spark open conversations about depression.
