Positive Conversation Starters for Teens

Humans are social creatures. We constantly depend on interacting with others to sustain ourselves and live fulfilling lives. Social interaction is an extremely important aspect of our society as it allows us to communicate our thoughts, feelings, and actions.

However, social interactions can be easily overlooked when much of our entertainment has shifted from natural, genuine conversations to consumption of digital media.

In times of need, we require empathetic attention to emotionally address our problems and improve our mental health. As simple as it sounds, engaging in a conversation with another human being can emotionally uplift a person and foster a deeper sense of connection compared to interactions with inanimate objects.

We can rely on using positive conversation starters to build up our relationships with others and break any barriers of isolation we may be confined in.

Here is a list of positive conversation starters teens can be inspired to use:

  1. What is something you are grateful for?

  2. What are you looking forward to this week?

  3. What is a value you continue to uphold in your life?

  4. Where do you find beauty? (ex: nature, people, school, etc)

  5. What is your favorite childhood memory?

  6. What is the best compliment you have received from someone?

  7. What’s something that made you smile this week?

  8. Do you have any aspirations that you want to pursue?

  9. Describe a moment where you were overcome with surprise or happiness

  10. Did you witness any small act of kindness this week?

Positive conversations starters can even be casual and allow you to know a person better:

  1. What is your favorite hobby?

  2. What color represents you best?

  3. What type of music do you listen to and why?

  4. What’s the last book you read?

  5. Do you have a favorite movie?

  6. If you could meet any historical person, who would it be?

  7. If time travel was real, what era would you travel to and why?

  8. If you could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?

  9. Is there any project you are currently working on in your life that you’re passionate about?

  10. Are you a winter, spring, summer, or fall person?

Conversation starters pair well with a calm and composed manner. Whether you are a teenager or you are talking to one, maintaining a sympathetic manner will allow you to conversate better with the person you are talking to.

Remember to be present in a conversation. If someone is sharing their personal feelings at a time when they are vulnerable, make sure to actively listen to their concerns to show that you care.

So, don’t be afraid to take a step forward and initiate those meaningful conversations. By using these tips, you will be able to foster empathy and make the world a brighter place.
