Journal Prompts for Self-Discovery

Journaling is an incredibly useful mindfulness tool for people of all ages. By writing down your thoughts and feelings, journaling allows you to process the world around you, gain control of your emotions, and think more clearly. Especially during times of change or overwhelming stress, journaling can help you prioritize concerns, manage stress, and take a step back from the situation.

Here are some tips to try if you’re just getting started:

  1. Make journaling convenient: keep a journal (or paper) and pens near you

  2. Try journaling once a day: even if it’s for a couple of minutes a day, set aside time in your schedule to write down your thoughts and feelings. If you’re feeling stuck, write about what happened that day, or about things you’re grateful for

  3. Journal about anything you want: feel free to write or draw, doodle in the margins, scribble in it, or make it colorful! Your journal is 100% your’s and should feel personal.

  4. Keep a running list of journal prompts: just in case you ever run into writer’s block, keep a list of prompts on a post-it in your journal, or on the first page

For the new year, here are some journal prompts about self-discovery to get some ideas going:

  • If there were no limits in life, what are 5 things I would do?

  • What are 10 things I’m grateful for?

  • What do I value most in life?

  • What does a perfect day look like, from start to finish?

  • What brings me peace and balance?

  • Do I treat people around me kindly? What about myself?
